In Loving Memory of Our Buddy, Jake

It's not often that an animal fits so effortlessly into a family, but for over 12 years, we were blessed with such a companion in our buddy, Jake.

Jake joined our family from the Harford County Humane Society. During our visit to the shelter in Fallston, we walked past many barking dogs, yet it was the calm, tail-wagging dog sitting quietly on a preschool cot that caught our eye. That dog, originally named Carlton, became our next family member. Our boys, Quentin and Reagan, quickly renamed him Jake, a name that suited him perfectly.

From the start, Jake’s calm demeanor was a hallmark of his personality. He was a friendly companion to our family and everyone he met. New acquaintances often remarked on his kind face, a reflection of his gentle nature. Well-behaved and loyal, Jake rarely needed a leash or fence, staying close to home unless off on his woodland adventures, proudly returning after rolling in deer droppings.

Jake was Cheryl’s constant companion during daily household tasks and was often seen riding shotgun in Howard’s CJ-7, patiently waiting while Howard ran errands. He shared our home with our cat, Teddy, maintaining a peaceful coexistence. In his younger days, Jake joined Howard for early morning runs, remaining a faithful partner as the years passed and walks replaced runs.

He wore his badges of honor, like the scar from a raccoon attack at eight years old, with quiet dignity. Jake was an effortless pet, so much so that he accompanied us on vacations and even flights. Car rides were his favorite, evidenced by his eagerness to jump back into the truck after an 8-hour trip from North Carolina, ready for more adventure.

Jake’s biggest goal was to be with us, never wanting to be left behind. He became the unofficial mascot of our family business, making regular appearances at the funeral home, where he built relationships with our entire team. His kind soul touched everyone he met.

The void Jake left is still felt almost two years later. His presence made us better, and his memory continues to warm our hearts.

Rest in peace buddy.
